CANON JOHN’S CONCERTS OF THE WEEK

APRIL 21 to APRIL 28

By John Schaefer

Good morning.  I trust your Easter celebrations were appropriately joyous and full of gorgeous music.

Contrary to popular opinion, I do not go to every recital and concert that is available. But, I do promote those events I shall be attending or hope to do so. In case of concurrent offerings, I will not have determined which to attend.

I wish to begin with a special recital. JOE LEFEVRE, tuba player with the Kansas City Symphony, will play a recital in Grant Hall at UMKC today Monday the 21st, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Long, long ago, I played tuba and sousaphone. I am particularly fond of Vaughan Williams's Tuba Concerto.

Perhaps we shall be so fortunate to hear it on his recital. There is no admission charge.

Wednesday the 23rd, the Conservatory Wind Symphony will travel to Helzberg Hall for a 7:00 concert. This is a ticketed event. Tickets can be purchased through the Kauffman Center Box Office or from the Conservatory.

Also on Wednesday evening is a violin/piano recital presented by JOSEPH GENAULDI and SEAN CHEN.  The recital includes works by Beethoven and Faure and will be held in White Hall , beginning at 7:30 p.m. There is no admission charge.

The next date on my calendar is Friday April 25th, at 12 noon, ELIZABETH SUH-LANE of the Bach Aria Soloists will present a violin program at the Keystone Methodist Church. Later in the day, at 7:00 p.m. FRIENDS OF CHAMBER MUSIC presents 'Voyage de Passion', music by Joseph Jongen, Maurice Ravel, and Gabriel Faure at the 1900 Building. There will be a pre-concert lecture at 6:15 p.m. I so enjoy French music.

Sunday the 27th offers a rich treasury of events. Let us begin with the KANSAS CITY CIVIC ORCHESTRA at Helzberg at 3:30 p.m. ROSEANN PENNER KAUFMAN will be the Organist for Saint-Saens's Organ Symphony; A movement from a Mozart Violin Concerto and the Toccata and Fugue in D Minor will comprise the remainder of the program. Please secure your free tickets in advance from the Kauffman Center Box Office.

At 4:00 p.m. in Lawrence at the Bales Organ Recital Hall, Dr. JAMES HIGDON will present a recital. He will include music by Leo Sowerby, Marcel Dupre, Olivier Latry, Jean Langlais, and Maurice Durufle. There is no charge for the recital, which should be 'dynamite'.

The day concludes with a concert by MUSICA SACRA at Rockhurst University.  The work to be presented is Haydn's Mass in Time of War. The concert time is 7:30 p.m. The auditorium is in Arrupe Hall. There is no admission charge.

Composer of the week: ALAN SCHULMAN; the work I enjoyed is a Theme and Variations for Viola and strings.
