GELETT BURGESS (Jan. 30, 1866)

January 30 is the birthday of American author, poet and critic GELETT BURGESS (1866-1951).

Burgess coined the word "blurb" and wrote the immortal poem PURPLE COW published in 1895.

I never saw a Purple Cow,

I never hope to see one;

But I can tell you, anyhow,

I'd rather see than be one.

ROY ELDRIDGE (Jan. 30, 1911)

January 25 is the birthday of jazz trumpeter ROY ELDRIDGE (1911-1989)

Eldridge "nicknamed 'Little Jazz",'was an American jazz trumpeter. His sophisticated use of harmony, including the use of tritone substitutions, his virtuosic solos exhibiting a departure from the dominant style of jazz trumpet innovator Louis Armstrong, and his strong impact on Dizzy Gillespie mark him as one of the most influential musicians of the swing era and a precursor of bebop."
